Events
From Sea To Table
Want to learn how the top chefs in the region prepare their catch? Come to the Pavilion to meet chefs from Hemenway's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar, Midtown Oyster Bar in Newport, Bristol Oyster Bar, and Blaze Restaurant. Each will show you how they prepare a fresh catch to produce award-winning results at their respective restaurants. If you love eating seafood, plan to work some sea-to-table time into your boat show schedule. But plan early: these events typically play to a standing-room-only crowd. We’ll also be serving oysters and Bloody Mary’s on Sunday morning thanks to Midtown Oyster Bar. See you then!

Meet Author Michael Tougias
In February 1952, a ferocious Nor’easter ripped the 500-foot-long oil tanker Pendleton in half off the Cape Cod coast. Twenty miles away a second oil tanker, the Fort Mercer, was also split in half. On both tankers men were trapped on the severed bows and sterns, and all four sections were sinking in frigid waters. Meet Michael Tougias, coauthor of The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue, to find out what happens next. The Disney Corporation is making a film based on the book, to be released later this year. You can also get a signed copy of this book destined to become a maritime classic. The presentation includes amazing photography and is also a great event for kids.
Rescue of the Bounty
Author Michael Tougias will talk about another riveting sea tale when he brings the story of his book Rescue of the Bounty to the boat show. The tall ship Bounty, which was featured in the Marlon Brando movie Mutiny on the Bounty, sank during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The captain and a crewmember perished in the accident, but the Coast Guard performed harrowing helicopter rescues to save the other fourteen sailors. Tougias will use slides of the storm, the survivors, and the rescue to make this an edge-of-your seat visual program.

Fashion Forward
Want to know how to dress for performance on the water? Come to the Providence Boat Show and attend our new Fashion Show to find out! The collection of clothing and apparel has been chosen by one of the top experts in on-the-water fashion: Team One Newport. People who spend their careers on the water go to Team One to learn about the best clothes and technical gear for the job. You’ll see apparel from leading companies such as Helly Hansen and Musto. You’ll also learn about clothing that will perform the way you need it to--all while keeping you fashion forward on the water.
From Office to Cockpit
Looking for adventure? Meet a woman who is transforming her career in corporate American into a life of sailing adventure. Regina Krieger, a U.S. Coast Guard–licensed captain and ASA-certified sailing instructor, is preparing to participate in the 40,000–nautical mile 2015/16 Clipper Round the World race—the only sailing race that welcomes amateur crew as competitors. Hear about the legs of the race, what it’s like to train, and how to prepare for this bold adventure. The presentation will include exciting video footage and a good opportunity to ask questions about an event that just might be your next sailing adventure!

Start Sailing Now
Do you want to start sailing but don’t know where to start? Molly Winans, editor of SpinSheet magazine and the new-sailor guide Start Sailing Now, will set you on the right course with a seminar and interactive panel discussion of sailing experts. You’ll get answers to all your questions—from what type of shoes to wear, to what to ask a sailing school before you sign up for lessons.
Teamwork on Oliver Hazard Perry
In a special presentation with Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI), you’ll learn how the small, labor-intensive, purpose-driven community of a Tall Ship is an ideal environment where people can learn how to work hard and work together. Come learn about the special brand of teamwork onboard this unique Rhode Island-built vessel in a presentation that applies to all ages—from kids and teens to adults interested in how to build strong teams. Curious about the ship? See pictures chronicling the construction of Oliver Hazard Perry, the first ocean-going, full-rigged ship built in America in over 110 years.

Cooking your Catch
Don’t miss this live demonstration of preparing and cooking native New England seafood. The fresh catch is thanks to the crew of East Coast Charters/Hot Reels. You’ll get to see how Chef Phyllis Arffa, owner of the award-winning Blaze Restaurant in Providence, prepares the crew’s catch and cooks it into something sublime. And yes, you get to eat Chef Phyllis’s creations too!Meet Author Kevin Saulnier
Meet Kevin Saulnier, local author of the novel Bart and the Compass Rose. Set on Block Island, the novel begins with Nate West living a simple existence and taking tourists out on his boat. He loves his job and his island—but true love has eluded him and he wonders if it is time to move to the mainland and find a girlfriend of substance. Everything comes to a halt when Lou Gauthier, the man who raised Nate after the death of his parents, is found dead—and Nate suspects murder. Meet an author who has turned his love for New England waters into the stage for a riveting tale.

Family Adventures Afloat
Meet Kate and JP Mouligne, along with their children Antoine (14) and Zoe (12), who sailed transatlantic from Bristol, Rhode Island, to France in the summer of 2014. The entire family will talk about why they went, about the challenges of managing at sea as a family, and about the joys they experienced. You will learn about their destinations, including the Azores and France, and the food of those regions. You’ll also hear answers to the most commonly asked questions, such as: How much wine did you take? Who took care of the family dog? If a family adventure afloat is one of your dreams, you won’t want to miss this presentation.
