One of the best ways to enjoy yourself on the water is to learn how to go boating safely. That may not sound as exciting as running full-throttle in a fast powerboat or skippering a high-performance dinghy. But think of it this way: getting out on the water without understanding the rules of the road and basic maneuvers such as docking and anchoring is like getting behind the wheel of a car and hitting the highway without knowing how you switch lanes or who goes first at traffic lights. Talk about stress!
And for some boaters, safety education is not an option. In Rhode Island, anyone born on or after January 1, 2026 is required to pass an approved boater education course before legally operating any vessel powered by a motor of more than 10 horsepower. Anyone operating a personal watercraft—regardless of age—must have passed an approved boater education course.
In Rhode Island, there is now a convenient way to get your Certificate of Boating Safety Education in three easy steps.
Three Easy Steps
- Link to a state-approved online boater-safety course at www.boat-ed.com/rhodeisland/. The course is free and has been approved by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management/Environmental Police. If you prefer a home study course book, you can request a freecopy by contacting the Environmental Police (401-222-2284).
- After you do your course, download a free practice exam to prepare you for the in-person exam.
- Sign up to take the required in-person exam administered by a representative of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management/Environmental Police.
Safe Boaters Earn Discounts
The course covers a range of topics—from boat handling to reading the weather—and prepares you for a variety of situations you could face on the water. Because educated boaters are safer boaters, completing this state-approved online course can also earn you a discount on your boat and PWC insurance.
Take Your Exam at the Providence Boat Show
You can take your in-person exam during your visit to the Providence Boat Show. The exam will be offered on Saturday, January 24, from 12 noon to 4 pm. You’ll need to have a photo ID. Children under the driving age without a photo ID must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with identification who can verify the child’s identity.
If you successfully pass the exam, you’ll be advised right away. If you do not pass, you’ll be advised on how to proceed.
This certification is approved by NASBLA (National Association of Boating Law Administrators) and accepted nationwide. The process is completely free of charge, so take advantage of this convenient way to get your certificate at this year’s Providence Boat Show.
