Brand New to Boating? Confident Captain’s Guide to Getting Started

Taking the first step towards your boating dream can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Rhode Island is home to a variety of world-class boating opportunities suitable for beginners and seasoned mariners alike. The scenic waters of Narragansett Bay have set the stage for world class sailing events such as the America’s Cup and upcoming Volvo Ocean Race and draw boating enthusiasts from across the globe. If you harbor dreams of boating bliss, you’re in the right place!

  1. Getting Started: Get Your Feet Wet!
Start by trying out the various types of boating to see which you like the best. You may find that the thrill of speeding along in a powerboat is what you’ve been looking for, or maybe you’ll enjoy the feeling on the wind in your hair as you drift along under sail, or you may decide that setting off in a kayak is your preferred means of exploring Narragansett Bay. Whatever your particular interest, boating opportunities for beginners abound right in your back yard. For an introduction to the boating lifestyle, sign up for a guided tour or charter with a professional captain to “get your feet wet”.

  2. Classes & Instruction
Once you know which type of boating you’d like to explore, it’s best to sign up for some training. In addition to hands-on instruction, you’ll want to complete the RI Safe Boater Education Course (required for anyone born after 1986, or anyone operating a personal watercraft- regardless of age).

  3. Buying or Renting
Now that you’ve gotten the training and experience you need to consider yourself a “boater”, you may start to think about becoming a boat owner or making plans to rent a boat through a boat rental company or membership program. Visiting a boat show is a great way to take a close look at the new boats on the market and find out about local boat rental opportunities.
